PSG vs. Manchester City score, takeaways: Messi scores first goal for club, beats former boss Guardiola

PSG , the heavy favorites to advance out of Group C, got their first statement win in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

PSG were forced into a tough stretch early this season with matches against Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur in addition to Club Brugge, who are also still alive in Group C. PSG will be happy to have gotten through that stretch with four points rather than three.

PSG now have seven points from four games while Man City have five after back-to-back league defeats following their opening win at Feyenoord.

At PSG , PSG dominated possession in the first half, but were unable to get on the scoreboard thanks to some strong goalkeeping by Joe Hart and missed chances by Edinson Cavani.

PSG finally broke through eight minutes into the second half through a set piece from Angel Di Maria that Idrissa Gueye slammed home for his first PSG goal after a terrible back pass from goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

PSG’s lead was doubled shortly thereafter by Javier Pastore, who was left completely unmarked in the box when he got on a rebound of a blocked free kick in what proved to be an easy finish. Messi thought he had made it 3-0 a few minutes later, but PSG was ruled to be offside on the sequence leading up to his goal.
